Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of harnessing it appropriately. Personal talent is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He watched the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention valuing the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has demonstrated that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Jude possesses a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and build a atmosphere which he can [have] this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. He has not played for the national team since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in his club's victory against the German side this week.
The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping the captain's game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for years. In my view it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden drilling in goals from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to net in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He may not be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong squad into an superior one.
